Meals Distribution

HCPS will provide students with free meals in two ways: School curbside service and neighborhood bus drop-offs

Henrico, Va. Henrico, Va. Sept. 4, 2020 — Even when school begins using a predominantly virtual format, families depend on the thousands of meals prepared each day by Henrico County Public Schools’ School Nutrition Services Department. The department has answered the challenge of a highly unusual school year with plans to get free breakfasts and lunches to students using two distribution systems. Nutrition staff members will offer free curbside pick-up service at all HCPS schools, and team with HCPS Pupil Transportation Services to distribute free meals directly to 61 stops in Henrico County neighborhoods, using school buses. A list of meal distribution drop-off sites follows this message.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Monday that, in accordance with the federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act, the universal meals distribution in effect since the spread of the pandemic in March would be continued through Dec. 31.

Among the features of the HCPS plan:

  • Free meals are available to any child 18 or younger at all HCPS school locations and identified bus stops.
  • Parents and guardians can pick up meals at any HCPS location regardless of where their student is enrolled.
  • Parents and guardians don’t need to provide student names or I.D. numbers to receive meals.
  • Families are strongly encouraged to apply for free and reduced-priced meals benefits, in order to participate after the current meals program expires Jan. 1, 2021.

School curbside service

Distribution of free meals will take place at all elementary, middle and high schools.

  • Monday through Thursday (Friday meals are distributed on Thursdays.)
  • 7-9 a.m.: Hot breakfasts (when available) and cold lunches.
  • 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.: Hot lunches as well as cold breakfasts for the next day.

Neighborhood distribution using school buses

HCPS buses will distribute free school meals to neighborhoods two days a week. Modifications are possible, based on demand and other logistical factors. Participants should follow social distancing and mask guidelines at bus stops.

  • Mondays and Wednesdays. On Mondays, buses will distribute meals for Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesdays, breakfasts and lunches will be distributed for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, as well as Monday breakfast.
  • Buses will make 30-minute stops at each location, between 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

The following pages contain a current list of bus stops slated for school meals distribution. See an online map of school and bus stop distribution sites by going to https://tinyurl.com/HCPSMealsSites.

HCPS will use a predominantly virtual learning model for at least the first nine weeks of the school year because of the coronavirus pandemic. For more information, go to our Mission Forward page at https://henricoschools.us/returntoschool/.

Hello Montrose Families,

This message is for all elementary students in grades PreK – 5 that still need a device for remote learning.  The devices being assigned are iPad for PreK-K and Chromebook for grades 1-5.  iPads and Chromebooks will be distributed Monday 8-31-20, Tuesday 9-1-20, Wednesday 9-2-20, Thursday 9-3-20, and Friday 9-4-20 between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. to facilitate remote learning in the 20-21 school year. Any rising Kindergarten students that were issued an HCPS Chromebook this past Spring must bring the Chromebook and charger to be issued an iPad, case, and charger.  Please read these instructions carefully for details about borrowing and caring for the iPads/Chromebook:

iPad/Chromebook pick-up:

Go to John Rolfe Middle School Bus Loop to pick up a iPad/Chromebook on Monday 8-31-2020 thru Friday 9-4-2020 between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

We are recommending that:

  • If your student’s last name begins with the letters A-L, please go to the pickup location between 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
  • If your student’s last name begins with the letters M-Z, please go to the pickup location between 1:30-5:30 p.m.
  • Please know that the first day of distribution has been our busiest day and you could experience long wait times. We do have enough iPads/Chromebooks for every HCPS Pre-K and Kindergarten student.

 Questions and answers:

Who is eligible to receive an iPad/Chromebook?

  • Any Henrico Pre-K and Kindergarten students who is registered at an HCPS elementary school that has not picked up an iPad.
  • Any Henrico students in grades 2-5 who are registered that have not picked up a Chromebook.

What can I expect when I pick up the iPad/Chromebook for my student?

  • Please follow the established traffic pattern.  Pull into the bus loop to get in line. There will be an individual directing traffic. During the pick-up process, remain in your vehicle at all times.
  • Clearly write/print your student’s first and last name(s) on a sheet of paper and bring it with you.  You would then show that paper when it’s your turn to receive a iPad or Chromebook.  Staff will reference the sheet of paper and locate the name(s) in our system.
  • A staff member will approach your vehicle and ask for your child’s name and school, and your name. You will need to show valid identification and you must be a contact in HCPS’ PowerSchool system associated with the student receiving a device.
  • You will be asked if you have internet service in your home, and if you do not, you will be offered a Wi-Fi hot-spot device, if available (supplies are limited).
  • Proceed to receive a Chromebook or iPad, case, and charger. You’ll receive information about the iPad/Chromebook and the conditions of borrowing one. If you agree, the laptop will be placed in your vehicle’s back seat or trunk.
  • Throughout this process, all staff members will minimize contact and exercise safe practices.

What is needed for iPad/Chromebook to work?

  • Internet service is required for the iPad/Chromebook to function and connect to digital resources that will be provided to students by their teachers.
  • Each student’s HCPS account must be used to log into the Chromebook.

  • There is no educational software or content saved or stored on the iPad/Chromebook.

Where should I go if the iPad/Chromebook is broken or does not work?
